What Defines a Legit Social Media App?

It seems as if the end of 2020 and the start of 2021 resulted in a plethora of new social media platforms that everyone is raving about and, if you’re confused, don’t worry - you’re not alone! Many people are unsure of the different platforms that are out there and a great way you can grow and be a part of these conversations is by thoroughly vetting each app to see if it is a digital space that you are interested in occupying.

What definite a “legit” social media app?

The first thing I do when I hear about a new social media platform, I do the following:

  1. Read, read, read.
The first and foremost thing that you can do is find research about what the platform is, what it’s mission is, and what the agenda of the owner is.

  2. Curate a list of reliable sources using the app.
The next thing I do is curate a list of my friends or industry leaders that I look up to that are currently using and promoting the app. If they are using it but aren’t promoting it, they’re probably in the same situation as you meaning they are trying to check the reliability and the benefits of the platform.

  3. Download the app and reserve your username.
I think it’s really important to jump into any new app, whether it’s TikTok, Parler, or Clubhouse, and make sure that you reserve your username. As we have mentioned before, it is really important to have one username across all platforms.
For example, myself (Katie Schrock) can be found on Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Parler, TikTok, and Clubhouse under the same username: KtSchr0ck. This universal theme makes it easy for me to network via presentations, podcasts speaking opportunities and business cards.

  4. Engross yourself in the app.
If you make the conscientious decision to be a part of the app platform, dedicate three to four simultaneous days and the intentions of making current and trendy posts based off of what you are seeing. Research, Google, and watch YouTube, for every piece that you aren’t sure of. This helped me create a great TikTok following of over 20K in just a few months for my dog, of all animals, as I tried to learn the app and, if it was a space I wanted to digitally occupy.

TikTok?
Parler?
Clubhouse?
